you talk about bringing bill clinton back in, the master of arithmetic. what did president obama call him? the master of how to count things or whatever. then you have the loser who had some interesting ideas about getting rid of deductions it seems. where do you see the real plus of these two fellows coming in on this deal and helping the president cut a deal? >> chris, the real theme of the piece, my long time colleague nelson cunningham and i wrote, we have to have all hands on deck to solve these issues that are clearly before us. they're solvable but not without a sense of purpose and unity. basically you have president clinton who has the credibility of balancing the budget and then leaving a surplus. that's a pretty strong record to stand on and a lot of knowledge and experience. secondly, you hit it, he is -- he does do arithmetic well. he's also a pretty good salesman, pretty good persuader. i think you have those two great attributes with the former president. and governor romney, he's a problem solver, he's a business person. he knows how to re

so in that sense hillary clinton certainly fit the bill for the job, and they're hoping that susan rice would fit the bill for the job. keep in mind these five interviews she did on the morning shows were essentially a tryout for her. she was trying to prove herself to the president, and in that sense, as you were saying earlier, she sort of stuck to the talking points. and i know it's unfair to get pilloried for sticking to the talking point, but do you want someone who will think for themselves or do you want someone -- she was trying to show she would be a good soldier and do what you wanted her to do, and she did that and that got her into a lot of trouble. if she thought perhaps a little more independently, questioned the talking points, read the intelligence herself, she might have answered these questions differently or spoken differently on the shows. >> richard, you disagree. you say she would be an autonomous member of the cabinet, she would be a separate principal with her own stature, would not be someone who would do something that tom donnelly would send over the notes and

. >> we have talked about bill clinton as a super surrogate for barack obama. mike, the guy in that ad, he's a super anti-surrogate, an anti-validator of mitt romney. he looks like the voter that barack obama needed to change sides, that former reagan democrat, that white working class guy looking dead into the camera and saying, this guy destroyed us. he took away our livelihood and he made us build the stage that we had to stand on to announce the end of our jobs. it was absolutely the most devastating ad, but what was also remarkable was the romney people had no response. look, they had a six-month lead time on this line of attack because remember something called winning our future pac? they ran a 27 minute ad of this same message. romney, because he survived in florida after that, he seemed to think i can get over this because he didn't respond. >> i talked to -- >> jane mayer, you write in your piece that sarah palin of all people thought that the bain ad had a negative impact on mitt romney's candidacy. she thinks it worked. here she is on fox on electio
